American Designers: Jill Stuart

Jill Stuart Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear

Jill Stuart Fall 2010 Ready-to-WearJill Stuart was born 5 January 1965.  Whilst still attending Manhattan’s Dalton School, at the age of 15 she sold her first collection of suede fringed hobos silver and leather chokers and to Bloomingdale. As a fashion designer, she sold her first collection of silver and leather chokers and suede. Jill later attended the Rhode Island School of Design. The Jill Stuart Collection began in 1993 with accessories and innovations such as the fashion backpack, cocktail mini dresses and plaid kilt skirts. In 1995 she had her collection used in the movie clueless.
Jill Stuart Fall 2010 Ready-to-WearStuart mentioned Françoise Hardy, but also very present in this louche mix of Pallenberg, Stevie Nicks, and even a touch of early Madonna. She played the look both ways—dark and vixen on the one hand and angelic on the other. There was a variation of leather pants, topped with fringed, webby knits or lace poet blouses, did the same. In her 2010 Fall collection she felt inspired by "I was thinking of women like Charlotte Gainsbourg and Marianne Faithfull," she said. "Women who aren't afraid of mixing prints and silhouettes and textures." The dark, rock 'n' roll-tinged mix on the runway included sexy body-con draping and its polar opposite, heavy menswear tailoring with chunky, sometimes head-swallowing, knits. Dresses came very short and tightly wound around the body, some with asymmetrical necks, others with big shoulders—a sort of Balmain for the teenybopper set. There was a combination of hooded sweater coats and menswear-inspired evening options, like a tuxedo jacket and shorts or a lace blouse tucked into high-waisted trousers, had a sophistication calling.
